Early results: Iraqi PM winning in 2 provinces (AP)

BAGHDAD – Preliminary election results released by Iraq's electoral commission show Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is winning in two Shiite provinces in southern Iraq.

The results were the first vote tallies to be released in Iraq's historic elections, which took place last Sunday.

Thursday's announcement by the nation's Independent High Electoral Commission showed the State of Law political coalition led by al-Maliki is leading in Babil province by nearly 14,000 votes and in Najaf by 7,000.

The results reflect only about a third of the votes cast in each of the two provinces in Iraq's south.

Results for other provinces are still being tallied and have not been released.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Officials say Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has undergone surgery but already has been released from the hospital and is in good health.

A statement from al-Maliki's office says the surgery took place Wednesday at Medical City, the largest hospital in Iraq.

It says al-Maliki has been released from the hospital, is in good health and has resumed his duties. The statements gives no details about the surgery or how long al-Maliki was hospitalized.

An adviser, Yassin Majid, told The Associated Press Thursday that the surgery was "simple" but refused to elaborate.

The Shiite leader is hoping to keep his job after March 7 parliamentary elections. Iraqi and U.N. officials have said initial results will likely be released on Thursday.
